This small piece is a 19th century Upper Canada wooden Rebellion Box Dated 1838
It was made by George Lamb while imprisoned for treason in the Toronto jail. It is inscribed with poems, verse and dedications. Lamb is listed as a prison box maker by Withrow, Raible and Carter in their book “From hands now striving to be free” published by the York Historical Society. The protestations are very defiant and every surface exhibits rebellious attitude. The top is a little difficult to read but the inscription says that the box is dedicated to Lount and Matthews, the 2 prisoners who were executed for treason.
