Monumental Inuit Shaman’s Drum
A magnificent, monumental shaman's drum found in Cape Dorset by James Archibald Houston, an important figure in the recognition of Inuit art. From top to bottom, not including the handle, the drum measures 3.5 feet tall and 3 feet across. With the addition of the handle it is a whopping 4' in height. Comprised of a bentwood frame with stretched seal or caribou hide and featuring a sinew-lashed handle. The drum includes the original beater. Likely early 20th century. This would make for an imposing and dramatic piece of wall art. We have not seen a comparable example outside of a museum collection.
PROVENANCE:
James Houston acquired between 1952 and 1954, descended to John Houston, offered by Zwicker's Gallery in Halifax, into the collection of the late Halifax collector Christopher Wilcox.
